From Walk-On to Oregon Duck: Earning My Shot

When I arrived at the University of Oregon, I wasn’t supposed to be there, at least not on paper. I wasn’t recruited to play football. I came for track and field. But deep down, I knew I had more to give.

I asked the coaches for a chance to walk on. No promises, no scholarship, just an opportunity. What I didn’t realize then was that moment would shape the rest of my life.

Every day, I was competing with guys who had full rides and headlines behind their names. I didn’t have either. What I did have was hunger. I couldn’t afford to waste a rep, a practice, or a film session.

Eventually, that mindset earned me a scholarship, and later, a shot in the NFL.

Looking back, I learned that being a walk-on isn’t just about football. It’s about betting on yourself when no one else does. It’s about proving that preparation, discipline, and belief can take you further than talent alone.

That lesson has followed me into every season of life since, because no matter the field, we all start as walk-ons somewhere.

Wherever you are, remember: walk-ons still win. Keep putting in the reps, and your moment will come.
