What’s Your Coverage?
Posted on Feb 16, 2026
In the NFL, every defensive back represented “coverage.” Their job was simple: stand between me and the end zone.
Life isn’t much different.
Coverage is anything that stands between you and your objective.
Sometimes it’s obvious. Sometimes it’s subtle. But it’s always there.
Here are some of the coverages we all face:
Professional Coverage
-
Competition
-
Economic pressure
-
Shifting customer behavior
-
Leadership challenges
-
Market changes
-
Limited resources
-
Workplace politics
Personal Coverage
-
Self-doubt
-
Fear of failure
-
Negative influences
-
Resistance to change
-
Overwhelm and burnout
-
Lack of preparation
-
Distractions
Relationship & Family Coverage
-
Miscommunication
-
Different expectations
-
Time constraints
-
Stress spilling over from work
-
Unresolved conflict
Health & Wellness Coverage
-
Inconsistency
-
Poor habits
-
Lack of accountability
-
Injury or setbacks
-
Complacency after progress
Each one works like a defensive back in football. Something is standing in your way.
But here’s what I learned playing nine years in the league: coverage isn’t personal. It’s part of the game.
And what you study, you can solve.
You don’t beat coverage by complaining about it.
You beat it by understanding it, preparing for it, and executing with intention.
That’s the heart of my keynote, Beat the Coverage.
Identify what’s lining up against you.
Draw up the right game plan.
Then step forward and execute.
Coverage will always be there.
The question is whether you’re ready for it.
Beat the Coverage.
